“Les gilets jaunes triompheront”
(“Yellow vests will triumph”)
The “gilets jaunes” (yellow vest-wearing protestors) who are taking to the streets against rising living costs in France – some of them setting fire to cars and clashing violently with police this week – spray-painted an expectant victory message onto the Arc de Triomphe, the famous Paris monument that honours people who have fought and died for France.
According to Reuters, prime minister Edouard Philippe was not pleased, saying: “I am shocked by the attacks on the symbols of France. We are committed to dialogue, but also respect for the law.”
